Jeff Beck - Beck's Bolero

I have made one post for him in the past but tonight i thought that it wasn't enough! That's why i decided to rectify...

Geoffrey Arnold "Jeff" Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English rock guitarist. Whether playing alone or with his band, his sound is excellent! The artist has outstanding collaborations too (Mick Jagger, Kate Bush, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May, ZZ Top, Yardbirds a.o)...

Jeff Beck has earned wide critical praise so far! He was ranked 14th in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". MSNBC has called him a "guitarist's guitarist" and Rolling Stone magazine has described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". Furthermore, he has received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance five times and he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice! He also made a cameo appearance in the movie "Twins" (1988).

Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues-rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion and most recently, an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. As an example, in the following video you 'll see the great artist getting closer to classical music, trying Maurice Ravel's masterpiece, the world famous "Bolero"!

Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign

"Born Under A Bad Sign" is a blues album by Albert King. The album became one of the most popular and influential blues albums of all time and has been acknowledged by the "Grammy Hall Of Fame', the "Blues Foundation Hall Of Fame", and "Rolling Stone" magazine.

The album was first released in 1967. In 1998 "Sundazed Records" reissued the album with two additional bonus tracks, "Funk-Shun" and "Overall Junction", both written by Albert King.

It was the first album by Albert King for "Stax Records" and his second album overall. It is composed of singles released by King recorded between March 1966 and June 1967, with additional studio tracks. It was the great divide of modern blues, the point at which the music was rescued from slipping into derivative obscurity. Part of the album's success has been attributed to Booker T. and the MGs who gave his blues a sleek, soulful sound which gave King crossover appeal. Four of the album's songs became modern blues classics: "Born Under A Bad Sign", "Oh Pretty Woman", "The Hunter", and "Crosscut Saw". Together with "Personal Manager" and "Laundromat Blues", they formed the very foundation of Albert King's musical identity and legacy.

Albert King's guitar work on the album directly influenced legions of guitar players! It was really a profoundly influential album, not only in blues, but also in rock. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan have acknowledged King's influence; indeed, some of their guitar solos are close approximations to those found on "Born Under A Bad Sign".

Track Listing

Side A: 1. Born Under A Bad Sign (2:47), 2. Crosscut Saw (2:35), 3. Kansas City (2:33), 4. Oh, Pretty Woman (2:48), 5. Down, Don't Bother Me (2:10), 6. The Hunter (2:45). Side B: 1. I Almost Lost My Mind (3:30), 2. Personal Manager (4:31), 3. Laundromat Blues (3:21), 4. As The Years Go Passing By (3:48), 5. The Very Thought Of You (3:46)

Mali: Rokia Traore - Kele Mandi

...from the previous post...

Traore's musical style, however, has little in common with the griottes. Unlike their signature wailing sound, her voice is smooth and gentle, and her arrangements, while somewhat minimalist, make use of both traditional instruments like the balafon, n'goni, and kora, as well as acoustic guitar and electric bass.

That sound is evident on her debut release Mouneissa, from 1998, but most evident on her 2000 release Wanita. For Wanita, Traore wrote and arranged the entire album, seizing the controls from a male engineer who believed that a young girl was incapable of handling the production of an album. The result shows a deeply personal and individual style which reflects both innovation and tradition.

Rokia Traore also released Bowmboi (2004) and Tchamantche (2008).

In this last part of the short tribute to Rokia Traore, her song has the title "Kele Mandi". Enjoy it!

Mali: Rokia Traore - Mouso Niyalen

I decided to remain in this country because i like its music very much.

Well, don't get surprised that i do love the songs of this African country. For everyone who doesn't know it, Mali's sound is close to perfection! For everyone who also doesn't know me, i'm something like the Malian Ambassador here in Greece! That's why i uploaded for tonight one song by another Malian artist who has the name Rokia Traore (born: January 26, 1974).

Rokia Traore's family was both a blessing and a curse for her musical career. Her father was a diplomat and she spent her childhood travelling over several continents, to Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and France. There she was exposed to a variety of styles of music, from classical, jazz, and pop to Indian traditional composition.

However, her family was also part of Mali's nobility, which has traditional caste prohibitions against their members making music. For her countryman Salif Keita, who was a member of the Manding people, it was an almost insurmountable burden. For Traore, though, the prohibitions were not as strict. The Bamana ethic group did have a musical tradition of their own, especially among women, with performers called griottes travelling to perform at weddings and gatherings... We will continue with the same artist in the next post...

For the time being we enjoy Rokia Traore in an amazing audio! It has the title "Mouso Niyalen"... And don't ever forget it! Mali's sound is close to perfection!

Manu Chao - Mentira

Manu Chao (born Jose Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao on June 21, 1961), is a French singer of Spanish origin (Basque and Galician). He sings in French, Spanish, English, Galician, Arabic and Portuguese and occasionally in other languages.

Chao began his musical career in Paris, busking and playing with groups such as "Hot Pants Αnd Los Carayos", which combined a variety of languages and musical styles. With friends and his brother Antoine Chao, he founded the band "Mano Negra" in 1987, achieving considerable success, particularly in Europe. He became a solo artist after its breakup in 1995, and since then tours regularly with his live band, "Radio Bemba".

Manu Chao sings in French, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, Arabic, English and Wolof, often mixing several languages in the same song. His music has many influences, as punk, rock, French chanson, Iberoamerican salsa, reggae, ska, and Algerian rai. These influences were obtained from immigrants in France, his Iberian connections, and foremost his travels in Mesoamerica as a nomad following the disbanding of Mano Negra. Many of Chao's lyrics talk about immigration, love, living in ghettos and drugs, and often carry a left-wing message...

We 'll continue with the same artist in the next post. For the time being we have a very nice audio of him which is entitled "Mentira". It belongs to the album "Clandestino" (the cover is in the photo)...

Celine Dion - I Can't Help Falling In Love

...second part...

However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a hiatus from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed a three-year (later extended to almost five years) contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

Dion's music has been influenced by genres ranging from rock and R&B to gospel and classical. While her releases have often received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled and powerful vocals. Dion is the best-selling Canadian artist of all time! In addition, her 1995 album "D'eux", is the best selling French-language album of all time! In 2004, after surpassing 175 million in album sales worldwide, she was presented with the "Chopard Diamond" Award at the World Music Awards for becoming the best selling female artist of all time. According to Sony Music, Dion has sold over 200 million albums, worldwide! She has also won several awards in her career so far...

Celine Dion - Alone

Celine Marie Claudette Dion (born March 30, 1968) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur. Born to a large, impoverished family in Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband Rene Angelil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the anglophone album "Unison", establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English speaking areas of the world.

Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angelil, she achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history... we 'll continue with the great artist in the next post...

"Alone" is the title of the song that we 'll listen tonight. Celine Dion's voice is wonderful for another time!

Mark Eitzel - Jenny (2007)

...second part...

Eitzel released more music in 2001, beginning with a more electronic turn in "The Invisible Man" on Matador Records. This was followed by two covers projects in 2002: "Music For Courage And Confidence", which was material written by other songwriters, and "The Ugly American", an album which included reinterpretations of American Music Club songs performed with a band of Greek musicians.

American Music Club reformed in 2003 for a sold out show at the London South Bank Centre. The following year they released "Love Songs For Patriots" and toured both the United States and Europe several times. The Guardian Newspaper called Mark "America's greatest living lyricist" and the album received glowing reviews across the world. In 2008 the band line up changed again and the band released "The Golden Age" which "UNCUT" magazine said was their best since Mercury with a 5 star album of the month review. Eitzel released a compilation album of soundtrack material and electronics in 2005, "Candy Ass". His album "Klamath" was released at the end of 2009 on Decor Records which "UNCUT" magazine said it was his best solo album yet. In addition to all the above albums, Mark has also released many mail order, tour cds, his most recent being the limited edition (500 copies) "Brannan St.", which is available at his concert dates and at the Decor records website...
the last part of Mark Eitzel's tribute in the next post...

Do You Want To Learn More About Rock Ballads? Then You Better Look For Mark Eitzel!

He is one of the most important figures in the Rock ballad scene! Therefore I prepared a 3-post tribute to this great artist.

John Mark Eitzel (born January 30, 1959, Walnut Creek, California) is a musician, best known as a songwriter and lead singer of the San Francisco band American Music Club (AMC).

Eitzel spent his formative years in a military family living in Okinawa, Taiwan, Ohio and the United Kingdom. He moved to America in 1979. He started making music while he was a teenager in Southampton, England.

His first band was a punk band called "The Cowboys" when he moved to Columbus, Ohio at 19. They released one single in 1980. His second band was called "The Naked Skinnies" and they released one single in 1981. He moved to San Francisco with "The Naked Skinnies" in 1981 where they disbanded in 1982. The same year Eitzel formed American Music Club (AMC) in San Francisco. The band performed and created albums for 12 years. At one point, Eitzel also sang with San Francisco's "Toiling Midgets", and often recorded solo work while involved in AMC.

AMC disbanded in 1994, and Eitzel focused on his solo career, releasing "60 Watt Silver Lining" in 1996. It was a surprisingly smooth, jazz pop departure. Following this, he released "West in 1997 co-writing all of the songs with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, with whom he also toured. He followed up with "Caught In A Trap" and "I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby", assisted by Steve Shelley of "Sonic Youth" and Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew... we 'll continue with the same artist in the next 2 posts...

"No Easy Way Down" is the title of the audio that we 'll listen in the first post. It's an amazing song! Feeling at its best! Enjoy it!

Well, the very famous and happy rhythm is here. Enjoy it!

Muddy Waters - Fathers & Sons

The previous post brought me here. That amazing song reminded me of the name of the great Muddy Waters!...

So... If you have, or just listened to "Electric Mud" of this Blues legend and you simply liked it, "Fathers & Sons" is the CD for you. It was recorded with some of the best players on the scene at the time: Otis Spann (Piano), Michael Bloomfield (Guitar), Paul Butterfield (Harmonica), Donald "Duck" Dunn (Bass), Sam Lay and Buddy Miles (Drums).

The album Recorded in Chicago, Illinois on April 21-23, 1969 and live at the Super Cosmic Joy-Scout Jamboree, Chicago, Illinois on April 24, 1969. Muddy Waters, using a band of very talented artists of that period, showed once again who was the dominant figure in the Blues music field!

The album had 16 songs but the 2001 remastered CD edition includes four additional studio sides issued for the first time: "Country Boy," "I Love The Life I Live, I Live The Life I Love," "Oh Yeah," and "I Feel So Good."

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Give Me Back My Wig (by Hound Dog Taylor)

...from the previous post...

On February 22, 2000, stevie Ray Vaughan was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C. He also won several W. C. Handy Awards, during his lifetime and posthumously, including "Entertainer Of The Year" and "Instrumentalist Of The Year" in 1984. In 2003, he was ranked #7 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Classic Rock Magazine also ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007... Do you want something more?... Stevie Ray Vaughan! Three words that include everything!

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood

...from the previous post...

Stephen Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Eighteen albums of Vaughan's work have been released.

He was inspired to play guitar by his older brother, Jimmie Vaughan, and was influenced by such players as Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. After a few years as a sideman in and around Austin, Vaughan formed the band "Double Trouble", with whom he made four successful studio albums and established a reputation as one of the foremost blues guitarists in the world!

In 1986, after years of substance abuse from alcohol and cocaine, he spent a month in drug rehabilitation, and remained clean and sober for the final 4 years of his life, until his death (i mentioned about in the previous post)... We 'll continue with the last part in 2 days, as usually...

Did you notice the photo of this post? Stevie Ray was able to play the guitar from behind! Oh, he will do exactly the same in the video! The song has the title "Texas Flood"! A smash hit, really! Enjoy it!

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Cold Shot

On August 26, 1990, a sold out concert of 30,000 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, featured an encore jam with Vaughan brothers (Jimmie & Stevie), Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. On August 27, shortly before 1 a.m., a helicopter carrying Stevie Ray Vaughan en route to Chicago crashed within seconds after takeoff... It was the time that the great musician passed away... Too early in his life...

Did you notice the date? On August 27, 1990... Oh it's like it happened this year, just 10 days ago...

That's the reason that i created a short tribute to this gifted artist! So, for the time being we are listening Stevie Ray Vaughan on the song which has the title "Cold Shot" (there is also the Bluesman Johnny Copeland in the video) and we 'll continue with the same artist in the next 2 posts...

The Nebulas - Dragunov

From the previous post... Part 3...

In October 2003, during the mixing phase of their 2nd CD, the band was hastily summoned to Europe to liberate the low countries of Belgium and Holland with a 10-day offensive, during which many songs from the new album would be showcased. With demand for a new The Nebulas CD now at a fever pitch, the band released "It's Go Time" in January 2004 & immediately began rehearsing for a second tour of Europe - a mission successfully accomplished in April. Now officially based in eastern Massachusetts, this fusion of east meets west has produced a unique, full-bodied musical phenomenon that has impressed live audiences throughout North America & Western Europe, in addition to being featured on myriad surf/instro radio programs and compilation projects the world over. The Nebulas are currently writing and recording material for their third studio release and are in the early stages of planning their next California tour, scheduled for 2005.

In the winter months of '05, the band closed the armored door to their super-secret training facility located in an abandoned textile mill campus somewhere at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and began the tedious work of reorganizing the fine metal shavings attached to a stack of 3M analog tape reels into something resembling a D-day-esque aural assault on the world's ears. Some say "Mission: accomplished", others say "You should have had it mastered". Be your own judge...

The song of the last part of the tribute has the title "Dragunov". Enjoy it!

The Nebulas - Exotic

From the official site of the group...Part 2...

"The Nebulas" are the result of a powerful chemical reaction that occurred when elements of a highly-developed west coast guitar sound fused with a thunderous East Coast rhythm section in the early months of 2001. In the fall of 2000, California-based guitarist Mike Dominguez (The Sand Dunes & The Aquatones) packed up his double-digit collection of Fender guitars & amplifiers and headed east to the Ocean State of Rhode Island. It was there that he teamed up with the preliminary members of The Nebulas resulting in "Hot Rods, Waves & Women", a brief 7-song demo (now long out of print and highly sought after) which introduced "The Nebulas" as a viable component of the 21st century's ever-evolving surf/instro scene. To achieve the optimum live sound, as well as augment future recorded works, the Nebulas recruited Dan-O Ware on the Fender Jaguar guitar as the fourth Nebula.

In March 2002, after the combo's full-length debut, "Nebula One," hit the streets in a shower of critical praise and radio airplay, another Sand Dunes' alumnus joined the folds of The Nebulas in the form of Eric Grammer on the bass guitar. With its lineup solidified, the band began performing in earnest, playing high profile shows on both coasts (and places in between like Akron, Ohio) with the likes of The Red Elvises, Junior Brown, The Boss Martians, Slacktone, The Hypnotic IV, The Infrareds and Pollo Del Mar, among others. After a successful west coast tour in the fall of 2002, yielding the Double Crown Records release, "KFJC - Live at The Pit," from a performance on the legendary Phil Dirt's Los Altos Hills radio show, the band returned to New England to commence work on their next studio effort... the last part in the next post...

"Exotic" is the title of the song that we 'll listen tonight. Nice sound! Enjoy!

Mike Dominguez: Lead Guitar
Dan Ware: Rhythm Guitar
Eric Grammer: Bass Guitar

Kyuss - Black Widow

The group disbanded in 1997. They felt that they were in a decline and felt it best to call it quits before it escalated into something that could not be fixed. The line up had shifted dramatically between 1989 and 1997. Josh Homme, John Garcia, Brant Bjork, and Chris Cockrell were the original members. Chris was replaced by Nick Oliveri during high school. That line up recorded "Wretch" (released in 1991) and "Blues For The Red Sun" (released in 1992), after which Nick soon left. The eight year older, but very able Scott Reeder from "The Obsessed" (metal band from Maryland) was brought in. This line up recorded the famous self titled album "Kyuss" (released in 1994). Brank Bjork left after this due to personal reasons. Alfredo Hernandez was brought in. The final line up recorded "…And the Circus Leaves Town" (released in 1995). The band toured and soon disbanded. With the compilation "Muchas Gracias: The Best Of Kyuss", one final greatest hits CD was released in 2000.

A lot of bands have been inspired by Kyuss, including Electric Wizard, Monster Magnet, Orange Goblin, Beaver, Dozer, Los Natas, Truckfighters, Acid King, Fu Manchu, Clutch, Pelican, Torche.

In the following audio we listen the song "Black Widow", which is the last one in this sort tribute for Kyuss. Enjoy it!

Kyuss - Space Cadet

The band was originally formed in 1989 in Palm Desert, California under the name "Sons Of Kyuss". Actually, they started in 1988 as Katzenjammer, which later became "Sons Of Kyuss" - a name taken from a monster in the game "Dungeons & Dragons" - under which they released an eponymous demo. After their bass player at the time Chris Cockrell left, "Sons Of Kyuss" shortened their name to just "Kyuss" in the beginning of 1991.

Over the next five years the band released four full length albums, and one last EP compilation in 1997 entitled "Queens Of The Stone Age". This nicely tied up the loose ends of Kyuss and introduced the sound of the popular band "Queens Of The Stone Age", which several "Kyuss" members later joined.

The quartet gained popularity around the desert due to their famous generator parties. These were parties fueled by gas generators in the canyons and isolated desert surrounding the small valley towns (we 'll continue with the same group in the next post).

Second song in this 3 posts-tribute is the audio with the title "Space Cadet". It's not a simple song. It's a hymn! I hope you ''ll agree with me. Enjoy!

Little Richard - Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On

Richard Wayne Penniman (born December 5, 1932), known by the stage name Little Richard, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and recording artist, considered key in the transition from rhythm and blues to rock and roll in the 1950s.

Eventhough he is very peculiar and eccentric (he was also a homosexual and a preacher so that i prefer more to listen and less to see him), he is one of the leaders of the rock'n'roll music scene. Anyway, the fact is that he doesn't need more recommendations, everyone knows him, even though so many years have passed since the age that he was specially famous!

In this post we 'll listen this legendary figure on the song which has the title "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"... We 'll continue with the same artist also in the next post...
