Magic Sam - West Side Soul

Magic Sam (Sam Maghett) was a great, soulful singer and smooth, glowing guitarist - born in Mississippi but raised on the West Side - who would have become one of the biggest stars of blues if he hadn't died of a heart attack at age 32 in 1969.

He first recorded West Side Soul in 1967 for Delmark's owner Bob Koester. Although he learned from the Chicago blues greats, his debut album, pretty much marks the dividing line between the classic Chicago style and what we know as contemporary electric blues today. His serpentine, tremolo-laden guitar style, represented a new step in blues guitar and proved highly influential. The album is also remarkable for promulgating the merger between blues and soul that was still a new idea at the time. Finally, it's an album which is considered by many to be one of the greatest blues records of all time!
